  10.        These release notes describe IRIS ATM release 2.3.1. IRIS
  11.        ATM is a network interface controller (board and software)
  12.        providing Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) with ATM
  13.        adaptation layer 5 (AAL5) protocol mapping over Synchronous
  14.        Optical Network (SONET) connectivity at 155.52 megabits per
  15.        second (OC3c) for Silicon Graphics Origin 2000, Onyx2,
  16.        CHALLENGE, POWER CHALLENGE, Onyx, and POWER Onyx servers and
  17.        supercomputers.

  19.        IRIS ATM supports both permanent virtual channels (PVCs) and
  20.        switched virtual channels (SVCs). For SVCs, the product
  21.        complies with the ATM Forum's ATM User-Network Interface
  22.        standard, versions 3.0 and 3.1.  The product supports
  23.        constant bit rate (CBR) and best effort traffic, and
  24.        supports use of peak cell rate, sustainable cell rate, and
  25.        maximum burst size on the transmission channels. IRIS ATM
  26.        supports IP-over-ATM in compliance with RFC 1577 and RFC
  27.        1755.  The encapsulation method for carrying network
  28.        interconnect traffic over ATM AAL5 conforms to RFC 1483.
  29.        In addition, IRIS ATM supports SPANS (Simple Protocol for
  30.        ATM Network Signaling) on the Origin and Onyx2 platforms.

  32.        The driver supports all standard IP applications through
  33.        SVCs using a best effort traffic contract.  The driver also
  34.        supports a character device application programming
  35.        interface (API) for customer-developed applications.  This
  36.        API supports PVCs (both IP and non-IP) and non-IP SVCs.

  39.               contains the Software License Agreement.  This
  40.               software is provided to you solely under the terms
  41.               and conditions of the Software License Agreement.

  44.        IRIS ATM can be installed onto the following platforms:
  45.        Origin 2000, Onyx2, CHALLENGE and POWER CHALLENGE L,
  46.        CHALLENGE and POWER CHALLENGE XL, Onyx and POWER Onyx
  47.        Deskside, and Onyx and POWER Onyx Rackmount.

  51.        Each IRIS ATM board provides four bi-directional links that
  52.        support multiple simultaneous virtual channel connections,
  53.        which can be a mix of permanent (PVC) and switched (SVC)
  54.        channels. The IRIS ATM board interfaces to the system
  55.        through the XIO interconnect, requiring one XIO slot.
  56.        Multiple IRIS ATM boards can be installed; the exact number
  57.        depends on the platform.

  232.        IRIS ATM software is a set of applications, a driver, and
  233.        ATM protocol modules that must be built into the system's
  234.        installed operating system.  The currently installed
  235.        operating system (_e_o_e) must be version 6.5 for installation
  236.        of IRIS ATM to proceed. The _v_e_r_s_i_o_n_s  command, as shown
  237.        below, can be used to determine the version of the currently
  238.        running IRIX.  This IRIS ATM release requires the operating
  239.        system release shown in the example below:

  248.        The installed Origin/Onyx2 IRIS ATM board must be version
  249.        030-0948-003, or later.  Prior versions of the IRIS ATM-OC3c
  250.        4Port XIO board are not compatible with IRIS ATM 2.3.1
  251.        software. The board's version is indicated by a tag placed
  252.        near the board's XIO connector on the tall-component side.

  254.        The installed CHALLENGE/Onyx ATM board must be version 030-
  255.        0570-007, Rev.B, or later.  Prior versions of the IRIS ATM-
  256.        OC3c board are not compatible with IRIS ATM 2.3.1 software
  257.        due to their lack of a MAC address. The board's version is
  258.        indicated by a tag placed near the board's IBus connector on
  259.        the component side.

  261.        For the IRIS ATM software to operate, the IRIS ATM hardware
  262.        must be installed and connected to one of the following: to
  263.        another ATM system, to an ATM switch, or to itself (using a
  264.        loopback cable). In order to use SVCs, the adjacent system
  265.        must support ATM UNI signalling. In order for the IRIS ATM
  266.        ILMI module to operate, the adjacent system must be running
  267.        an ATM ILMI module that complies with ATM UNI 3.0 or 3.1.

  269.        Note:  When connected via a loopback cable, the hardware
  270.               verification utility (atmtest) can be used to test
  271.               the board's functionality, but upper-layer
  272.               applications cannot be verified, since they route
  273.               through the operating system's loopback interface
  274.               (lo0) whenever the destination address is local.

  292.        IRIS ATM does not support loading the miniroot over the ATM
  293.        connection; Silicon Graphics computers cannot be booted over
  294.        ATM.  This limitation does not affect loading the miniroot
  295.        over an Ethernet network.  A system can boot (load the
  296.        miniroot) over its Ethernet network, and, thereafter,
  297.        function with both Ethernet and ATM network connections.
